RSSmeme vs. Readburner – Which Do You Use?
I am a huge user of Google Reader, Shared Items, Linkblogs, and so on and have been really happy with services like RSSmeme and Readburner that are taking users shared items from google reader and making some great sites in the social news arena...better then sites like digg and mixx in my opinion.
My issue so far though with both of these services has been which do I give my most time to? Do I use both? It has been a tough question....but I have to say RSSmeme has taken the lead as of late due to their addition of notes (a new feature within google reader) and also RSSmeme allows you to create a custom rss feed of stories shared via your friends on friendfeed which I think is a really kool little feature to have.
update: as I am writing this post I see where benjamin (who created rssmeme) is looking for someone to write a wordpress plugin that will pull all of the notes for an article out of RSSmeme and onto your blog.
So what do you all think? Which are you using? What do you like/dislike? Lets discuss (or disqus).
Digg Has Gone To Crap…Where Are You Going?
![]()
Well Digg seems to be living up to its name by digging it self a deeper and deeper grave when it comes to the social news scene. Everyday I read posts about people jumping ship and for us geeks reports that tech news is slowly falling off the front page faster then ever...which is never good when this is the community that made digg what they were at one time.
So you have decided to pack up your shovel and stop digging....where are you going for your social news fix and the ability to vote on whatcha like? Are you even using a social news site these days?
Personally I find myself not really using any with sites like rssmeme, readburner, linkriver, and google shared items to get my news fix.
Reddit
[http://www.reddit.com]
Besides having a cute little mascot Reddit lets you add and vote on stories and links in categories politics, programming, politics, and science.
Hacker News
[http://news.ycombinator.com/]
Hacker News...its new and its fresh, simple and clean design. great news site for us early adoptors and geeks. Also offers a forum feel of sorts where users can ask questions and get input back from other users. I think it has a pretty good feel of community and I have enjoyed reading it. Recently made headlines when they banned Valleywag.
Mixx
[http://www.mixx.com]
Mixx is probably the closest to the digg look with all the different news categories along with news, pictures, and videos. You have groups you can join and of course the ability to vote for your favs.
So what are you using for your social media needs? Are you like me and not really using social news sites like digg or mixx and going with sites like readburner, rssmeme, ect? I would love to get your feedback on the subject.
NixNews – The Marriage of Linux and Social News
I am proud to announce the launch of a new site to the social news arena which is dedicated to all things Linux. NixNews was created and maintained by my friend linuxchic who you might also know from the Alternageek Podcast which she co-hosts.
It is currently in beta and but linuxchic decided to release it in the wild to have people (linux junkies) test it out and find the bugs as we go....there are a few things here and there that are still being polished but the main jist of the site being news about linux is out there and ready to be voted on.
If you are familiar with other social news sites like digg or mixx then you will be right at home and ready to start voting right away. With that said everyone jump over and get an account set up....lets find the best linux news out there for the masses.
