Want Facebook Chat On Your Pre? There Is A Patch For That!

So one thing I have been wanting to have with me on the go and on my Palm Pre is the ability to chat with my Facebook friends via Facebook Chat.

Well now I am happy to report there is a patch that allows you to do just that!

Basically, apply the patch the go into the Messaging app. In there, add a new account with the username in the format <username>@chat.facebook.com with your password being your facebook password.  So take note, you'll need to enable/set a Facebook username on your Facebook account if you haven't yet.

This patch works by altering the hosts file on your device to make your device think "chat.facebook.com" is "talk.google.com". Thanks to Facebook's chat service now using jabber (the same that GTalk uses) just adding a GTalk account in the Messaging app gets full Facebook Chat working!  Oh, and don't worry, regular GTalk accounts will still work fine; there doesn't seem to be any negative side effects of the patch.

All you need to install is first the patch and then WebOS Quick Install.  Install the patch, login, and you are set!  I have used it a few times already and it is great.

Google Buzz DOES Work On The Palm Pre!!!

So I have to say I was a little disappointed when Google Buzz launched last week and it looked like us Palm Pre users were gonna be out of luck using the mobile edition.

Well I am happy to say that now we are able to by using the following url

https://m.google.com/app/buzz?force=1

Now the only feature so far that I can see that doesn't work on the Pre is the location based stuff which really I am ok with.  At this time I am happy with having the mobile version at my finger tips.

Fix For Palm Pre App Install Issue

So recently I upgraded to the newest version of WebOS 1.3.5.1 and noticed an issue when I went to install new apps from the app store.  Now first let me say I don't know if this is a pre-update issue, a 1.3.5 or 1.3.5.1 issue or what but I just know it has happened to a couple of my friends.

It appears to be related to people who have downloaded homebrew apps and after the fix of the app limit and some files not moving over or something it is causing you to either have applications look like the are installing fine or they install and then get an error tied to the launch icon.

So how do you fix it?  Well after heading over to the precentral.net forums I was able to find the perfect solution that has helped myself plus a few others.  So if you are having issues getting new apps installed give this a whirl and it might just work out for ya!

1. Go into Preware and remove Luna Manager.
2. Remove Preware using Orange + tap Preware icon.
3. Then use WebOS Quick Install to remove Package Manager.
4. Restart your phone (full restart).
5. Then use WebOS Quick Install to reinstall Package Manager.
6. Use WebOS Quick Install to reinstall Preware.
7. Use WebOS Quick Install to reinstall Luna Manager.
8. Luna Restart your phone.
9. Use Preware to install Emergency Migration Helper (phone will do auto Luna Restart).
10. Delete any failed installs on your phone using Orange + tap icon with ! on it.
11. Hopefully you can now download apps from the app catalog.

And as always if you have any questions or need anymore help just hit me up on here or on twitter.

Palm Pre App Spotlight : RadioTime

I found a pretty kool little app that lets me listen to some of my favorite radio stations here in Kansas City as well as listen to other stations all over the country and world.  Its called RadioTime and it is free from the app store.

Now I already have a couple apps that allow me to play streaming music on my Pre like Pandora and Radio Hibiki but there were a couple local stations I wanted to be able to listen to but was unable to find a way to stream them without a player via the browser on my laptop.   RadioTime fixed all of that and now I can listen to them anytime and anywhere (or atleast where i can get a signal).

One of the kool features of the app is its ability to find local stations based on your GPS as well so say you are in a town and have no idea what the local stations are...bam!  The app gets that for ya.  You can of course also listen to your favorite stations from say home while on the road by setting up presets.

So overall a nice app that allows me to find some local radio and stream it via my phone, its free (besides some banner ads), and it also allows me to discover other stations that I might like as well, and uses location based search too.

Video Recording Comes To The Palm Pre With Precorder

So today I wake up and pull up my rss reader to find a post on Precentral.net about using an application called Precorder to record video right from my Palm Pre!!!!  Now all I could say to that was SWEET!!!!!

Precorder has been developed to bridge the gap between the current revision of WebOS and a future release that will enable video recording. It is capable of recording in multiple combinations of audio and video and includes support for using the built-in LED for lumination while recording in dark areas. Video recorded with Precorder is viewable through Palms built in video application.

So after loading all that I needed I recorded my first video and here it is.....

First 12second video on my palm pre (in landscape) on 12seconds.tv

Now how can you get video setup on your Pre? Well first remember this is in Alpha so it is still buggy, needs tweaks, and not fully tested so things CAN go wrong...so make sure you are aware of that.

Once you have accepted that you will need to install via WebOS quick install (not available in the app store or via something like preware (yet)).  You just have to grab the two IPK files from the apps wiki page.  Install and if all works out after that you are good to go!!!

precorder1 precorder2

As you can see above you have your card that allows you to start recording (stays that way through recording...no visual of what you are recording at this time in the alpha) and a card with your settings like selecting you audio type (mp3, aac, ect), video type (mpeg 4, h.264, ect) and if you wanna use the flash for dark shots.

Like I stated in the video this is an early alpha release so there are bugs, things can happen, and features are missing but it is working and recording video so at this point that is a huge plus.  I look forward to seeing it take shape with future releases and I will be testing and posting more video to see how I can get the best results.

I just have to say I love the homebrew community!!!

note : if you have any questions on this feel free to contact me via email or shoot me a message on twitter...would love to help you out.

webOS to get Flash “Later This Year”

Now how awesome is this news!!!!  I cannot wait to have Flash on my Palm Pre!!!  Now when is "later this year"?  Well the good news is there are not many days left in this year and talk about a nice holiday gift from Palm.

“A prerelease version of Flash Player 10.1 is now available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems. A beta is expected to be available for Palm webOS later this year.”

How about a little video showing off Flash 10.1 on the Pre

wIRC Brings IRC To The Palm Pre

So I remember back in the day getting on the internets and jumping on IRC or Internet Relay Chat chatting it up with everyone all over the world.  So fast forward 12-14 years, technology has advanced but stuff like telnet, IRC, ect are still out there and the WebOS Internals gang has created wIRC and brought IRC to the Palm Pre!!!  How cool is that.

wirc

I have been using wIRC for a few days jumping on Freenode and EFnet and chatting it up.  They just released version 0.0.3 so needless to say it is pretty green and can have some issues but hey it works pretty good and has been great.  Check it out!

Add Yahoo! (And Other) Messaging On Your Palm Pre

So I mainly use google talk as my primary IM client on my computer and my Palm Pre but I have some friends who also use Yahoo for their IM'ing needs (including Allison) so I have been interested in getting that ability on my Pre.

Well today I discovered a messaging plugin that allows you to connect to more service then the default ones.  It adds functionality for Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, Office Communicator, ect.

screen

Now I have not tried them all as I dont really use any of the other services but I can say that the Yahoo one does work.  I was able to login, see my friends online and have a chat with one.  So there ya go some more added features to your Pre

Note : There has been some talk that Yahoo will be included by Palm in the future as a default option so if you are not kool with installing packages and stuff you may still see that as an option soon.

My Palm Pre App Purchases

Recently Palm took the Apps Store for the Palm Pre live and since then I have purchased a few apps that I thought were valuable editions to my mobile experince and well worth the purchase price which was from .99 cents for Scoop, 1,99 for Tweed, and 2.99 for Net2Streams Pro.  Below are my thoughts on the apps......

us_2009-04-11_133207 pro_2009-04-11_135441 scoop_2009-04-11_135342

Tweed [twitter app] - Tweed is one of my favorite apps on the Pre and one that I use on a daily err hourly basis.  I just think it works very well, flows well, the dev team is very responsive on twitter, and they keep adding kool new features (just released a new version with landscape mode, and some other tweaks). [follow on twitter]

Net2Strearms Pro [music app] - This one is great for following different genres of music from Shoutcast, Icecast, Local stations, and you can even grab other streams available out there on the interwebs.  (I added some good stations playing 8-bit goodness....what can i say I am a geek!)

Scoop [rss reader] - This one is by the same company that created Tweed and is a green app (hopefully improvements with future versions) but is still already pretty sweet.  I love the syncing with Google Reader allowing me to star and share posts, as well as like and able to render images.  Like I said it is far from perfect yet but is on to a great start.   [would like to see groupings of my feeds like GR and links to the orginal post] [follow on twitter]

Google Wave On Your Palm Pre? There’s A Hack For That!

google-wave-logo

So the hot new web app for everyone to use these days is Google Wave and thankfully one of my buddies was able to spare me an invite and with my recent purchase of my Palm Pre I like to try the services I use on my computer to see if maybe I can use them on my Pre when I am away from my computer and going light for carrying tech devices.

I had seen where the iPhone had access to Google Wave and the layout looked pretty nice so I thought hey lets give it a shot!  The outcome was not the best.  I pretty much has to zoom in to see my waves and it seemed like it was crashing on me....overall not the best experience to follow my waves when on the move.

wavepre

Now what I have come to find out is the issue is that like some mobile sites that do not format correctly Google Wave does not recognize the Pre correctly and gives it the normal mobile experience and not the kool look that comes up when using mobile safari.

That is where the "iPhone user agent spoof" tweak via webOS quick install comes in.  It basically does what it says it makes the server you are hitting think you are accessing that you are coming in with the safari browser so it formats your experience likewise.

Now I can say I am happily using Google Wave on my Pre and it is pretty nice.  Gotta love the tweaks coming from the Pre community.

What Google Wave looks like on the iPhone and now the Pre with the tweak
googlewave

3971688061_3a5fc7dde3
(obviously the shots are on an iphone but this is what it looks like on the pre as well)

What you need

Nice documentation on getting WebOS Quick Install setup on your machine (and for future installs of homebrew apps)

Once you have Quick Install up and running you can grab the iPhone user agent tweak, reboot your pre and you should be set to go!

*Note*  I have noticed you need to wait until the main google wave page has loaded or you will get an error and have to refresh your google wave session.  So give it a min or two to completely load.

So there you have it if you are a veteran of hacking/tweaking your Palm Pre then you know what I am talking about with all this but if you are new to the Pre and need some help I would be more then happy to help you with this and any other tweaks you are looking to make.  You can hit me up via email, contact me on twitter, or hey just comment here on the blog post.

I just really wanted to get this post out to let all the Palm Pre geeks out there that you CAN run Google Wave via the Pre.  Enjoy!

*Update* Obviously Google Wave is a new system that still has some issues so I have found times and some waves that will from time to time crash on me even with the tweaks so hey don't expect perfection.

Need Some Wallpapers For Your Palm Pre?

palmpre

So I found a kool group on flickr that has a pretty big collection of pictures that are the right size for your Palm Pre wallpaper (which i believe is 320x480).

Two many to decide which one to use?  Why don't you use Switcharoo which is a homebrew app that allows you to switch your wallpaper on your Pre in an interval of your liking.

Palm Pre : Getting Your Homebrewing On!!

precentral-logo

Are you a Palm Pre user?  Are you maybe not happy with the number of apps that are available in the official app store?  Well there is an answer for you and it has (at the writing of this blog) 160 apps and growing!

With the homebrew apps directory provided by PreCentral.net you can get lots of apps out there that can help you customize your Pre how you want it, games, productivity apps, twitter apps, ect ect. created by developers and Pre users like yourself.

fcoaster_2009-06-08_081228

Now in order to get the functionality of the homebrew apps you have to follow a few directions but it really is not to complicated and to help with the process check out this How To : Install Homebrew apps which is very good and makes the process very simple.

Basically you need the most updated version of java, one little app to run on your machine (for just the first time then you can use filecoaster for adding apps directly on your Pre), and of course the kool code for unlocking the developer mode “upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart” (thats awesome!).

For me having the homebrew stuff is a big plus and reason I am really looking forward to getting my Pre.  If you decide you are interested in getting into them and have some questions on how to get everything up and running feel free to contact me anytime either via email or shoot me a message on twitter.....I would love to help you out the best I can.

The Palm Pre : A New Era For (jeff)isageek

sprint-palm-pre

Thats right!!! With Tuesday almost over I am now officially under a week before I purchase my new phone which if you don't follow me around the internet will be the Palm Pre! I cannot wait! I have been playing around with the SDK, emulator, other people's Palm Pre's and following all the talk the forums.

There are a lot of things I am looking forward to with the Pre like better notifications then I am use to with my current phone, the great integration with many google services, great multitasking, using it with itunes and pandora, and adding apps as they come along (which is slowly becoming more and more daily).

Those are just a few things and I am sure I am missing a few but overall I am just looking for a kool new experience with a phone that so far I have really enjoyed learning all about!

You can bet over the next week and beyond I will have more on my thoughts and kool stuff I find out there on the interweb.

[side note] a great site with lots of info, blog, and great forum is precentral.net if you are looking for information

preDevCamp Kansas City

predevcamp_2009

So this saturday I got the chance to go to preDevCamp here in Kansas City which is a camp/hackfest for the palm pre product which is on the Sprint Network.

I am no where near a developer but am so excited to get this phone and wanted to learn some about the Web OS that I was so excited to go! The event did not disappoint!

action is starting at #pdckc on 12seconds.tv

The camp took place at the Screenland Theater and our city had the 2nd most amount of people registered overall which was really kool seeing the strong development community here in the area. The event started around 8am with people gathering and getting setup then moved into some very kool speakers talking about all aspects of developing for the Web OS.

What I got out of the event? meeting others in the area developing, learning about the pre and the web os, a free web os book, pizza provided by little springs design, learning some new skills and playing around with the development tools to make apps for the pre.

I am hoping to take what I got from the day and maybe someday make my own app...but if not I feel like I got some knowledge and overall had a great time!

Thanks to all for making it a great time and for Palm for making a great phone in the Palm Pre

A Look At The Palm Pre

palm-pre-2

One of the mobile devices I am looking forward to checking out is the new phone from Palm called the Palm Pre which I think is due to be out in the next couple months from Sprint. I found this demo on the web showing off the abilities of the phone.

Looks pretty sweet and would love to get my hands on one so I could demonstrate to all my followers on twitter, friendfeed, facebook, brighkite, ect ect the list goes on and on so hey if someone at Sprint or Palm or somewhere else see's this and wants some free promo time with a geek who has thousands of followers you know where to find me...hehe hook me up!

Another quick note is there will be a preDevCamp here in kc shortly after the launch of the mobile device so keep an eye on the website if that is something that might interest you.
