The Dogs of KC need your help! Kansas City Doggie “Food-raiser”

So Spay & Neuter Kansas City along with Volunteams.org have launched a doggie "food-raiser" which is geared towards helping poverty stricken people care for their animals here in the Kansas City area.

In 2008, SNKC distributed in excess of 10,000 pounds of dog food. Our goal is to raise at least that amount in one month. With your help we can. We’re asking to people to collaborate in teams to raise dog food. SNKC and Volunteams will be keeping track of pounds contributed by each team.

[side note] I have been challenged to collect 1000lbs of dog food during the "food-raiser" and I would love to reach this goal. lets smash this total everyone!!!

I think this is a great goal that with the help of social media services like blogs, twitter, facebook, ect ect it can be reached and help those pets out there who are suffering due to owners having to cut back in todays economic conditions.

So what can you do to help out? You can do a few of the following:

- pledge some money to me and I will purchase the dog food and get it to SNKC and you are done!
- take some food to SNKC directly or even give a cash donation to help SNKC reach their goal.
- spread the word by linking to SNKC, Volunteams, or my blog post.

here are some drop off points that you can leave your doggie food donations:

Spay Neuter Kansas City

So there you go. If you are interested in helping me out to get the food to those dogs who need it either contact me via DM on twitter or email me at jeffisageek@gmail.com or if you decide to go your own route let them know you are donating on behalf of (jeff)isageek to help me reach my 1000lbs of food goal. Thanks everyone lets make a difference!

BarCampKC – Sept 26th @ JavaPortKC

barcampkc

So its that time again!!! Time for another BarCamp here in KC.  The 2009 edition will take place at the JavaPort  on Sept 26th from 9am to 5pm.  Now maybe you are like what the heck is a barcamp anyways well here is a little info for you to digest:

BarCampKC is a user generated conference in Kansas City that's focused on innovative technology, blogging, and business projects local to the area.

"User generated" means the people who attend BarCampKC are the same people organizing and presenting at the conference. In other words we hope that if you come to BarCampKC you'll also present something ("run a session"). If not, just be ready to listen to other presenters, contribute to their content, and ask a lot of questions. For more info check out this Wikipedia entry

BarCampKC isn't about sponsorship by any single company, headhunters trying to recruit you, charlatans trying to sell you something, or lecturers showing you how to do your day job more efficiently.

BarCampKC is about presenting on the projects you're passionate about, involving your friends and colleagues, getting inspired by others, and meeting some talented and creative folks you'd likely not run into otherwise.

To register for BarCampKC jump over the the Eventbrite page. Also there is a blog that will be updated with information soon about the event as well.

So who is going to BarCampKC?  Will I see ya there?  I hope so!  Can't wait.

Kansas City DewLabs Taste Party

My buddy Jeremy recently contacted me about a kool event he was going to get to take place in where he would get a case of 7 new secretive flavors of Mountain Dew and a Flip Cam to have a taste party and let Mountain Dew know which flavors we liked the best.

So last night we setup shop in our basement and along with myself, Jeremy, Allison, and Sarah we tried all the new flavors and gave our thoughts.

The first video below is the one Jeremy sent in as a submission to get the DewLabs pack....and then the other 2 are the videos we took last night giving our thoughts on the different flavors. enjoy!

part 2

I think this is a very kool thing for a company to do and embrace social media by giving the fans a way to share their thoughts and of course give the company great information from its fans as well as some great genuine advertising.

Thanks again to everyone who made this happen.

KC Tech Cal : Calendar + Wiki = Events Galore

There is a new calender that has emerged in the Kansas City area called KC Tech Cal which is a calendar with a wiki feel that allows anyone to add an event they would like to share with the community.

KC Tech Cal is a unified calendar for the technology community of Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas. We are an all-volunteer effort and encourage anyone to import, create, and edit events. KC Tech Cal is a fork of Calagator, the unified calendar for Portland. Calagator also refers to the open source software running this site.

Calagator aggregates events so that users can visit a single source to discover interesting activities. Event organizers and participants share events with others through Calagator. Event planners use Calagator to check for possible scheduling conflicts, allowing them to make smarter decisions. Many people check the site regularly to find out what events they can attend each day.

One nice feature is the abilty to export or subscribe to the calendar you can add it to your favorite calendar application.

So with KC Tech Cal you have no reason to miss an event (as long as someone has posted the event in the first place though)

Startup Weekend KC Finalist – Annotify

First let me say that my intent when going to the presentations on Sunday night for Startup Weekend KC was to get video of all the demo's and post them on (jeff)isageek.net but my flip video had other ideas and decided to flip flop or something.  I was able to get the demo from the eventual winner Activism2Go as well as the 3rd place team which ended up being Annotify.

With Annotify their thought process is the web is full of documents...why cant you mark up a site, add notes, save your own personal copy and annotate the web.  As I stated the service came in 3rd out of the 8 startups and below you can check out the video of their presentation to everyone last night.

Want more information then check out the site at www.annotify.com [note the site is currently not live at the time of this blog post]

As I had mentioned earlier I had wanted to get video of all the presentations from the weekend but my flip had other ideas. If you were part of one of the groups and want to share your presentation or just talk about you startup then feel free to contact me and we can get something setup to film a little demo or something.

    Startup Weekend Kansas City

    kansas city startup weekend

kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw kcsw

This weekend there was an awesome event that took place here in Kansas City called Startup Weekend. So what is Startup Weekend you ask?

It’s an experience unlike any conference you’ve attended before. Over the course of a single weekend, you get to take time out from your current venture/business and practice building a new one. Think of it like time off the field.

Most ventures fail on Monday morning, which isn’t the point. The point is, you learn new skills, processes, coding frameworks, legal jargon, business practices, spread sheet programs, etc that you can bring back to your current venture. Startup Weekend is a weekend warrior event where anything goes, and practice is implied. You’re not judged (unless you judge) and learning is paramount.

People who attend the weekend stay in touch, hire each other and form new ventures as a result of ‘colliding’ for 54 hours. Its an awesome three days of networking, team building, coding, business planning and pitching (with some added cocktails and food).

Even though I missed the major part of the weekend I did get to attend the presentation part on Sunday night and let me tell you there were so many kool and smart people there showing off their hard work getting the startup from and idea to a working model. The startups that presented were as follows:

    Activism2Go
    Annotify
    Covalent Bonding
    Eussi
    MyConcerts.FM
    Rare Brew
    Stashmate
    Top Chirp
    TreadEX

[Check out the Startup Weekend KC site]
[Check out the Startup Weekend KC Vimeo videos]
[Check out the streaming broadcast of the presentations on ustream]

So as you can see the event was a great success and I look forward to following the startups that were born this weekend to see where they go and how they grow into who knows maybe the next twitter or friendfeed?  Great work to everyone involved!

[on a side note I will make sure and make it for the whole weekend next time]

AMC Mainstreet – A Trip In History To See The Future

    amc theatre

    amc theatre

This past week I got a chance to check out the new AMC Theater in downtown Kansas City called "AMC Mainstreet".

Now AMC Mainstreet is not your typical new theater setup in the suburbs of a major city. This is a building that opened in downtown KC in October 1921 as a vaudeville and movie house bringing it a rich history that adds to the movie experience when you walk around the complex. One of the kool parts of the tour was getting to see part of the original 3200 seat amphitheater still intact! very kool!

Now what about what you will find today? what are some of the features of the remodeled theatre?

    * Cinema Suites - The ultimate in luxury moviegoing at an affordable price, featuring Seat-Side Service™, with special amenities like plush reclining seats and a custom menu of favorites from The Marquee Bar & Grill.
    * Self-serve drinks with flavor shots and popcorn seasoning station to give your concessions an extra kick.
    * Reserved seating in all auditoriums.
    * Grab a warm cappuccino, latte or cup of joe at the Coffee Café.
    * Sit back and relax with a cold beer or glass of wine while you enjoy your movie.
    * Digital Projection and 11-channel surround sound puts you in the feature.

    AMC Main St 6

With all the great history of the theater as well as the food options of a bar and grill right there my awesome moment was the cinema suites...Now you may have been to the cinema suites at Olathe 30 but the added features at Mainstreet really took movie watching to the next level.

The Fortress Of Solitude AMC Main St 6

You have a bigger screen, you have extra speakers including ones in the ceiling raining sound down on you from above, as well as the butt kicker under each seat which brings the feeling of that huge explosion right to your chair! It was so much awesome sauce!

Here is a little video I took of the tour we took

So when can you check out all the great things going on with the new AMC theater downtown? Opening day is May 1st and it is located at the corner of 14th and Main, in the Power and Light District.

Free Tickets To The New AMC Mainstreet In Kansas City

Next Tuesday April 28th thanks to the local movie site the Scene Stealers you have a chance to participate in "Free Movie Day" at the new AMC Theater in downtown Kansas City which is called "AMC Mainstreet".

All you have to do is jump over to the Scene Stealers, be one of the first 25 people to sign up, and you are in!

The Mainstreet originally opened in October 1921 as a vaudeville and movie house. Having closed in the mid 1980s, it will have its grand opening on May 1, 2009, and now features an all-digital projection, six-screen movie theater. There are three traditional auditoriums and three Cinema Suites (for the plush in-theater dining experience), plus The Marquee Bar & Grill for drinks before and after the show. This is a true historical gem in downtown Kansas City. Back in its heyday, the theater hosted live performers such as Cab Calloway, Charlie Chaplin, and the Marx Brothers.

This looks to be a pretty sweet place to check out films and I think will be a great addition to the downtown area. So jump over to the Scene-Stealers and get you some free passes!!!

Startup Weekend Coming To Kansas City

    startupweekend

Big news in the Kansas City area as I have learned that we will be having a Startup Weekend here April 24th thru the 26th.  Now I have never had the chance to go to a Startup Weekend but sounds like something kool to check out.

    What is Startup Weekend?

Startup Weekend is an intense event bringing brilliant tech minds together to create companies, projects and great tech communities!

    What is the weekend like?

The weekend is fun, mentally simulating and always profitable (2 of those are true)! It starts Friday at 6pm and finishes up Sunday at 6pm, the hours in between are up to the community. Startup Weekend gets everyone in the same room, sometimes clothes and always feeds. What is next is really up to the people that show up, it is your drive and passion that will lead the weekend.

    What is the agenda?

Have you ever worked at a startup? Startup Weekends don’t really have agendas, just general times when the building is open for everyone to meet and work. If you are an agenda driven person, Startup Weekend might not be for you. You make the agenda based on the people, ideas and mood.

Sound like something you are interested in?  For the KC event you can check out the blog, the twitter feed and if you tweet about the event make sure you use the hash tag #kcsw.

Right now the details are getting ironed out but keep your eye out on the blogs or twitter for any new updates as they become available.
