Good Times At The Zaarly Launch Party

So last night was the launch party for new startup Zaarly.   Haven't heard of Zaarly or not sure what it is?

Also check out the Zaarly pitch at LA Startup Weekend

So right now there is an iphone app and a mobile browser experience to use Zaarly and of course being an android user I am hoping there is an app for that on the way as well...but for now its kool just seeing the community grow and find out how people are using the new service.

Zaarly has even launched a tumblr called Zaarly Stories to see how others are using the service and their experiences.

Here are some pics I took last night at the party.  It was great to see some familiar faces last night and even better that I got to meet a couple of people I follow on twitter in person for the first time.  Always great to make those real life connections.

Party took place at the bizperc space in downtown Kansas City.  At a great location and a great building

The launch party was presented by the KCITP group and hosted by bizperc

Marching For Babies And Walking For Hearts In May

May is my month for walking for good causes with the March of Dimes and the march for babies followed by the American Heart Association and the Heart Walk.

This year will be my 3rd year for the heart walk and my 1st for the march for babies which are both great causes.

It's great to join these events and know just my little contribution is making a big difference in peoples lives from babies all the way to the elderly.

If you have a way and would be interested I would love to have your contribution to my goal of $500 dollars for each walk as well as the goal of helping those in need.

Thank you very much!

Around KC: KCTwestival Returns March 24th

Thursday March 24th, 2011 marks the return of a great event we have had in the past here in the Kansas City area called Twestival.

Last year we did not have an actual event in Kansas City but in 2008 and 2009 raising money for two great causes in Charity: Water and Wayside Waifs.

Now Twestival is by no means a local event held here in the Kansas City area...in fact there are events held all over the country and even the world helping worthwhile charities.  If you are wondering if you city is having an event make sure to check out the official twestival site.

So back to the Kansas City event for which I will be attending...I have yet to hear which charity we will be raising money for and actually I have not heard an official venue but you can keep up to date by checking the website or subscribing to the twitter feed @kctwestival

Hope to see you all there and lets raise some money for a good cause!

Coming This Month – TEDxKC!

So it was recently announced awhile back that TEDxKC would be happening Thursday August 12th at the Nelson-Atkins Museum.

Now to say tickets were a hot item is an understatement.  But there is still hope as you can check out the discussion board for available tickets and who knows maybe a friend will hook ya up!

Not really sure what TEDx is?  Check out the official site for more info and of course for more news and info on the KC event you can hit up with Facebook page or the Twitter stream.

This year’s general theme is “What the World Needs Now,” and the local event will present three speakers and a performance by Quixotic, the Kansas City-based aerial dance and multimedia troupe.

Presenters include Brené Brown, research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, who will talk about social anxiety and human behavior; Francis Cholle, founder of the Human Co. and proponent of ideas about creative thinking and intuitive intelligence; and Michael Wesch, associate professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University, who is a digital ethnographer studying the effects of social media and technology on collaborative communities.

Here is a little promo showcasing Quixotic who will be performing at the event as well. They are a local group here in Kansas City who put on a great show.

Quixotic Promo 2010 from Quixotic Fusion on Vimeo.

I will of course be there and look forward to the presentations as well as chatting with everyone.  Are you planning to attend?  Hope to see you there.

Free State Social : Location Based Services

Scott Raymond from Gowalla had a great discussion on one of the hottest topics out there on the interwebs in location based services at Free State Social.

I grabbed the video but missed a little of the beginning and a little at the end.  Other then that enjoy what he has to say.

Gowalla co-founder and CTO, Scott Raymond, will discuss the growing impact of location based social networks, share insights in to how they will evolve and what’s coming next, and why it’s important for your business to embrace location based technology today.

Free State Social : How To Make Your Brand Stand Out Online

One of my favorite speakers at Free State Social was Sarah Evans who spoke on How To Make Your Brand Stand Out Online.

It's busy online and everyone is competing for your attention. One out of every three online Americans update their social media statuses at least once a week. So how do you stand out or make an impression? Sarah's goal is always to share practical advice you can apply or modify. She'll share nine ways you can stand out online in a non-spammy way. Hear a personal case study to see what "Find an opportunity to showcase what you do best" looks like in action. Be ready to participate during this session...Sarah always likes to get the audience involved.

Free State Social : Local Panel

This post is my first in a couple featuring Free State Social the social media conference which took place this last week in Lawrence, KS

I was able to get video of some of the panels and I also want to share my thoughts so be on the lookout over the next few days as my stuff starts hitting the blog.

Another good place to get some good video action from the event is from t-rave who is one of my fellow vloggers/geeks.

So onto the panel.  This was a panel highlighting some of local talent from the area and there thoughts on the local scene.  You had Zena Weist, Shea Sylvia, Ramsey Mohsen, and Tony Botello.

I know I was really looking forward to hearing what Tony had to say and to meet him in person for the first time.  He was very professional and I enjoyed hearing his insight.  One thing I will say is this panel was TOO SHORT.  Maybe next year they will have a longer one or maybe a couple.

Enjoy!

Happy Foursquare Day!!!

Today is 4/16 and that means its the new holiday Foursquare Day for all us fans of the service.  In honor of the day there are events planned all over the country for people to get swarm badges, businesses having specials for users of Foursquare, and of course a badge to honor the day.

Foursquare Day is about demonstrating the power of social media. It started as an idea by a Tampa, FL Optometrist and quickly spread world-wide.

Foursquare Day is April 16th - because it is the 4th month, and the 4-squared day! (4/16) It’s also the first "Social Media holiday" and was officially endorsed byFoursquare.com (TwitterFacebook).

Badge - In order to get the badge all you have to do is when you check in somewhere today just add the shout "Happy Foursquare Day!"

Events - There are events planned all over the country to celebrate the day.  A good resource to check out is 4sqday.com to see what might be happening in your city or follow the hashtag 4sqday on twitter.

If you are in Kansas City like me there is an event planned down at Blanc Burgers to try and get the swarm badge.  [info on KC event here]

Specials - I know there are business out there that are taking advantage of the day and putting specials out there I have heard that McDonalds is gonna be offering some specials as well as I know a local establishment here in Kansas City will be offering 25% off you order today.

I'm sure if you do some google searches or follow the hashtag you might be able to find some specials going on in your area as well.

Have fun everyone and as always don't forget to check in!!!

Startup Weekend 2 In KC (Apr 16-18)

So its that time again for another awesome event in Kansas City and this time it is the return of Startup Weekend plus this year there will be waffles!

If you missed last year it was a great event and I have been looking forward to it returning for another year.  Not sure why you should attend?

It’s an experience unlike any conference you’ve attended before. Over the course of a single weekend, you get to take time out from your current venture/business and practice building a new one. Think of it like time off the field.

Most ventures fail on Monday morning, which isn’t the point. The point is, you learn new skills, processes, coding frameworks, legal jargon, business practices, spread sheet programs, etc that you can bring back to your current venture. Startup Weekend is a weekend warrior event where anything goes, and practice is implied. You’re not judged (unless you judge) and learning is paramount.

People who attend the weekend stay in touch, hire each other and form new ventures as a result of ‘colliding’ for 54 hours. Its an awesome three days of networking, team building, coding, business planning and pitching (with some added cocktails and food).

What do you have to loose?

When: April 16-18, 2010
Where : Infegy Offices - 4151 North Mulberry Drive KCMO
Time : Doors open at 6pm on Friday
Cost : $30 dollars for a ticket

Last year I did some blog posts about the first Startup Weekend so check them out to get some more exposure to the event.

And The Startup Weekend KC Winner Is…….

My Exploration of ESP In Kansas City

So I was recently told about something a local company here in Kansas City is doing called ESP or The Ethnographic Sampling Project which caught my interest.

Now I am just in the learning stage and exploring of what ESP really is but wanted to share with you and see if maybe it is something that peaks your interest as well....

What is ESP?

The Ethnographic Sampling Project, ESP, is designed to sample brief moments of life by tapping into the citizen anthropologist.

What is the Ethnographic Sampling Project? It’s actually quite simple. We are a network of people who love sharing video, photos, audio and thoughts about why people do what they do, think what they think, buy what they buy. We believe technology has enabled observation and the ability to capture a moment on an unprecedented scale, creating a space where individuals can become part of a larger community.

The Ethnographic Sampling Project is designed to sample brief moments of life by tapping into the citizen anthropologist. Members of the group are given periodic challenges to capture specific experiences and share those experiences for discussion. The goal is to gain insight into human behavior and consumer culture through a dynamic range of personal perspectives and social contexts. Our hope is to prove a new, collaborative model for ethnography we call "open" ethnography.

Caught your interest? Come hang out at the Tweetup this Thursday night at Two West. [More Info]

(jeff)isageek Joins The Bandit Network

frothy creepy

review jeffisageek

So I recently was asked if I wanted to join a network that was being put together of some websites here in the Kansas City area called the Bandit Network.  We all know each other through doing movie reviews and we all have our thoughts and ideas on the new movies, events, and tv shows but also have other things we are interested in as well.

Putting a network of sites together helps in spreading the word about different thoughts, ideas, ect and helps in the promotion of each sites materials.

I Look forward to sharing stuff from the other sites included as they are some great and talented people.

Sites included in the network (so far) are:
