My Guest Appearance On The FFundercats

ffundercats

Last week I got a great chance to be a guest host on one of my favorite podcasts FFundercats which is a show that's subject is about a service I have come to love in FriendFeed. FFundercats is a podcast by FriendFeeders, for FriendFeeders, and about FriendFeed.

One of the regular hosts Josh Haley was out on vaction and Johnny Worthington asked if I could fill in and help talk about some of the big news around the web from the week as well as some of the goings on around FriendFeed.

I had an awesome time and look forward to maybe getting on the show again real soon!

On a side note I was glad with how I sounded as I was using my new USB headset which has really improved my sound quality when doing various shows. If you are looking for someone to be on your podcast feel free to contact me as I love chatting with other geeks about all things geeky.

[Check out FFundercats Episode 41]

Thanks again Guys!!

ffollo – Auto Follow FriendFeeders

ffollo

I found a kool service I have started using to follow those who either "like" or comment on my FriendFeed posts automatically. It is called ffollo.

Basically it is pretty simple you log into the service and set you preference of who you want to follow....those who like or comment on your posts or even those who like or comment on posts you liked or commented on...you can even extend it out to your groups and saved searches I believe.

One thing I did was when I set it up I created a group on FriendFeed called ffollo and place all my new follows there to kinda see what they are doing on FriendFeed and If I am liking what I see I can move them over to my main Home feed. very kool option to have.

The service was created by Paul Kinlan who has been great at answering any questions or helping with any bugs I have found. It goes without saying this service is in early early beta so you might find a few things that need to be tweaked and such.

FeedStats – Bringing You The Stats From FriendFeed

I recently wrote a blog post about a kool new service called What The Hashtag?!? by the gang at Microblink well they are at it again releasing the service call FeedStats which bring you all those stats that us geeks just love to get about the services we use.

Today we’d like to announce our second public project, FeedStats. FeedStats exists for the purpose of visualizing FriendFeed users’ data to see how they interact not only with the service, but with other users. It’s a quick way to find what services they’re using, when they post, and who interacts with their content the most.

With FeedStats you can get info like how much you or someone else is posting daily, what services you are using the most to post content, which day do you post the most, who are you most compatible with on FriendFeed, ect ect.

According to FeedStats I post an average of almost 67 times a day, I like Monday's to post and I use FriendFeed the most when it comes to services with Twitter not far behind.

This kind of service is not only a great way to see how you and others are using the service it also allows you to find others on FriendFeed that might have the same interests as you and worth a follow.

An example of a user page

Using FriendFeed As My Twitter Client

FriendFeed

This past weekend I decided to make a change with how I interact with Twitter by setting up FriendFeed to be my client of choice to monitor, post, and reply on Twitter.

So far it has been pretty effective but there are a few holes at the moment like if someone is not a friend or imaginary friend of mine of Facebook I will not get their @ replies (using tweetbeep to catch any that fall in the cracks at this time) as well as the ability to have mobile posts automatically post to twitter (it can be done in settings but I dont want every message to go to twitter).

My main goal with going this route is to get as much of my online activity onto FriendFeed...I really enjoy the service and how it allows me to find out what is hot out there on the web, allows me to interact with a great community, and share all kinds of great content and such with my followers.

How is this done you ask? It is pretty easy really just create groups of your FriendFeed friends like for mine I have one for the guys of my favorite podcast the ffundercats, local twitter users, and one for the gang on the social geeks podcast. Once I have them in a group I create a saved search pulling only their twitter posts and getting rid of the rest. With that you now have a twitter stream to your liking! If you are interested in trying something like this out let me know and I can help you set it up.

I now have FriendFeed as my news stream, my podcast stream, my twitter stream, and pretty much my finger on the pulse of the web and even the world. Pretty kool huh?

Monday I posted to FriendFeed that I was making the switch to FriendFeed as my Twitter client and a pretty good discussion opened up so I wanted to share it with you to check out and even get your thoughts and input....so if you are on FriendFeed give us your 2 cents on the subject.

Using Saved Searches To Optimize Your FriendFeed Experience

friendfeed

Are you a new user to FriendFeed? Maybe been using it for awhile? Real time feed have your eyes spinning as it flys by on the screen? Well have you checked out saved searches to help you manage your stream?

Saved searches allow you to customize by user, subject, likes, comments, service, ect and really make FriendFeed work for you and bring the information you are looking for. Some of the searches I have (once called filters) are ones looking for posts just about bacon, hot friendfeed discussions, or up and coming posts and the list goes on and on.

One great reference to use is the FF Saved Searches Group on FriendFeed which will keep you upto date with any new ones out there to grab as well as great discussion on how to maybe tweak that search you have.

Check that out and if you have any questions or wanna talk searches feel free to comment or shoot me a message sometime.

Bring FriendFeed To Your Site with Sharing

friendfeed

One of the kool new features added to the beta version of friendfeed is the ability to share posts from the service. You can share them on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Del.icio.us, and even embed it into your page like I did below with one of the Talk Social News episodes with my fellow Social Geeks contributor Wayne Sutton.

Definitely a very kool way to share stuff you find on FriendFeed around the interwebs as well as pretty easy to execute.

Here is another example...with a picture I had posted on FriendFeed. As you can see not only do you get the picture embeded but you get the likes and comments and you can even posts a comment right in the embedded item that will show up for all to see! Very kool. I think I will keep playing with this and see what different ways I can come up with to rock the house with this functionality.

Filtering FriendFeed = Becoming a FriendFeed Ninja

friendfeed

One of the awesome new features of the FriendFeed beta is the ability to filter information from your streams pulling what you want and more importantly what you may not want.

Bwana one of my fellow FriendFeeders and general geek put together a great post and video about the new filters (as well as highlighting some of the other new features).

Check it out and learn some kool new ways to use what I think is the best service out there!

[from Bwana: FriendFeed Filters Are The Star Of The Beta]

After checking out the video and chatting with some of my fellow users of FriendFeed I am having a great time pulling tons of great content off of FriendFeed and getting the most out of the service. I have been geeking out adding filters all morning :)

On a side note if you are on FriendFeed already there is also a room devoted entirely to filters called FF Filters so check that out for all kinds of discussion and updates.

Enhancing The New FriendFeed Beta With Greasemonkey

My fellow FriendFeed'er Rasheen put up a blog post on ways to make the new FriendFeed beta work for you and included were a couple of greasemonkey scripts you can use to change the look, add a few features, and customize what you see.

Below are the scripts that were featured. Of course the first thing you need to do is install greasemonkey if you have not already and if you have any questions feel free to contact me and we can see what we can do.

Cleaner FriendFeed [Widescreen] [Regular]

cleanerafter

* Cleaner and cool look and feel (FriendFeed is already clean, this makes it a lot cleaner)
* Different font style
* Highlights friends comments with baby yellow (instantly know that the user is already your friend)
* Highlights your comments with baby blue (it’s cool to see your own comments from river of comments. Looks good when you are a distance away your computer, makes your comment a marker in conversations)
* Highlights Likes to light pink
* Dims comments from non-friends (normal color of FriendFeed comment)
* Separated each posts with a bottom border

This userstyle brings the FriendFeed conversation to another level by instantly letting you know…

1) Your own comment (Powder Blue)
2) Your friends comments (Light Yellow)
3) Your non-friends comments (Normal FriendFeed Comment Color)
4) Likes (Light Pink)

FriendFeed Beta Service Icons [Script]

Adds service icons to the Friend Feed beta site using the API (only works on public entries)

fficons

FFlite
[Script]

You can take on the real-time feeds without being constantly updated with a barrage of updates as other FriendFeed users participate with comments and likes on the feed.

before

fflitebefore

after
ffliteafter

FriendFeed Twitter Tweaker
[Script]

Tweak the way Twitter entries are displayed on FriendFeed

1) For Twitter entries, appends the username of the Twitter user after the "N minutes ago from Twitter" message in the entry metadata

2) Helps you track Twitter users not on FriendFeed:

- Create a feed (formerly known as a Room) that includes the text 'twitter-friends' anywhere in the name (e.g. "kshep-twitter-friends")

- Add the Twitter feed from each user you'd like to track. You can add as many users as you'd like.

- When an entry appears in this feed, the name of the feed will be replaced by the username of the Twitter user who created each entry.

So there ya go.  Hope you find the scripts useful and if you come across anymore for FriendFeed or any kool greasemonkey scripts you wanna share please feel free as I am always on the lookout for more.

The FriendFeed Team Discusses The FriendFeed Beta

Unless you have been under a rock somewhere you probably have seen on the blogs, twitter, or FriendFeed itself about the new beta version of the service that adds some new features and brings FriendFeed to real time all the time.

Robert Scoble had a chance last week before the changes hit the FriendFeed beta site to record a discussion with the FriendFeed team and others about the process, the changes, and so on. Below are the 4 videos taken by Scoble so check them out and get a little insight as well.

Thanks Robert!

Some extra details I have found out this morning is the change will go up on the beta site at 9am pacific time so 11am central and noon on the east coast and that Robert Scoble has a really nice quality video of the whole press conference which will be kool to see. While we are on the subject of scoble here is what he had to say about the changes coming on FriendFeed last night.

Monkeying Around With FriendFeed

Last week I wrote a post about using greasemonkey to enhance twitter and thought hey why not do the same for FriendFeed since I do that same there as well.

Below is a list of scripts I use to add extra funtionality to FriendFeed through greasemonkey.  So do you have any scripts you use?  Would love to hear about them and share with other readers.

Endless Scrolling
Endless scrolling for friendfeed user pages. If you scroll down on a friendfeed page and the page includes these page 1 2 3... links, this script will automaticaly load the content of these pages and appends it to the site. jQuery supported.

FriendFeed Profile
Adds a profile section on FF user pages. Retrieves Twitter and LinkedIn info if available. Allows customization of which fields to display by editing the script and setting the variables. Supports multiple of same service (ie. two twitter accounts).

Cleaner FriendFeed V2
* Cleaner and cool look and feel (FriendFeed is already clean, this makes it a lot cleaner)
* Different font style

So there ya go.  Hope you find something to help enhance your FriendFeeding...see you in the streams!

FriendFeed : Some Thoughts On The Service

If you have been following my blog or twitter for any amount of time then you know I have a love affair with the service FriendFeed and that I am always getting excited over a new feature or posting something up on the service which then turns around and puts it up on my other social services I use like twitter or facebook.

I know talking to others at meetups and such I find people who are interested in FriendFeed or think it is to much to follow so they are kinda on the fence when it comes to the service.

Recently two people I follow on the interweb and most likely you do as well have talked about why they use FriendFeed or even more why you should.

Thomas Hawk posted "10 Reasons Why You Should Sigh Up FriendFeed" which included the ease of signing up, better exposure for your work, as well as it lets you get rid of your RSS reader.

Robert Scoble also put his two cents in on the idea of how great FriendFeed is by posting "Things I've learned by clicking "like" 15,301 times" which included likes are searchable, meta data, and he is getting to know his followers more intimately.

For me these were two great posts that I can pull ideas from when talking about what I find interesting when it comes to FriendFeed and why it has become a HUGE part of my daily internet usage.  So check those stories out and feel free to comment your thoughts on FriendFeed...what you like about it and what you dont like about it.

Bring Your Twitter Friends To FriendFeed

FriendFeed added a kool new option that allows you to bring your Twitter friends over to your FriendFeed stream with a few simple clicks.

ffimporter

The friend importer for twitter basically takes your twitter user name (no password needed) finds who out there is also on FriendFeed and lets you add all those users to a current list or create a new one.   Once you have done that you are ready to follow those new friends feeds.

Pretty simple but also a great way to add to your FriendFeed addiction hehe

Side Note - I added 629 new people to my FriendFeed using the importer so pretty sweet!!

Your FriendFeed Savior

friendfeed

Are you tired of seeing post after post about Governor Palin? Don’t have an iPhone, don’t want an iPhone, and don’t want to read about iPhones? You’re in luck, FriendFeed Savior is here to save you from all the drivel on the web that you just don’t care about. And just in case your curiosity gets the best of you, there’s a handy link to show you what you missed. And yes, it works on Friendfeed Real-Time as well.

Bjorn Stromberg is the creator of the greasemonkey script FriendFeed Savior and he also has instruction on how to edit the keywords in the script.

I know this will be a script that many in the FriendFeed community will find useful to block certain keywords. Enjoy!

What SUP FriendFeed?

friendfeed

Found a great way to get your blog posts hitting the FriendFeed service in record time using the services Simple Update Protocol or SUP!

SUP (Simple Update Protocol) is a simple and compact "ping feed" that web services can produce in order to alert the consumers of their feeds when a feed has been updated. This reduces update latency and improves efficiency by eliminating the need for frequent polling.

FriendFeed blog post on SUP

I initially found out about this from Josh Haley, a WordPress plugin (WP-SUP), as well as a little video put together by Benjamin Golub.

known issue : apparently there is an issue if you use Feedburner where it is stripping the tags that are added by the plugin..so just so you know that.

Ok with that said I am gonna give the SUP a try with this post. If all works right it should post right away to FriendFeed. 3, 2, 1.....
