The Secret Underground World of Lego
May 29th, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

Found this video on “The Lego Underground” as part of the Ignite series which sounds like a kool way to learn a lot in little amounts of time.

What is Ignite?
If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to show their answers.

Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis. Since then 100s of 5 minute talks have been given across the world. There are thriving Ignite communities in Seattle, Portland, Paris, and NYC.

This community site is sponsored by O’Reilly.

So now that you know what ignite is lets check out the presentation about on of my favorite things LEGO!

Chatterous : Chat Room By IM, E-Mail, Or Phone
May 27th, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

I recently added a chat room to my site for people who wanna come in and say hello, see who else is on the site and have a conversation, or whatever. I used the service Chatterous which is a new way to bring a chat to your site or blog.

Now what is kool about Chatterous is the ability to send and receive messages either via Instant Message, E-Mail, or even via your phone as SMS text messages! How kool is that?

What is Chatterous?

Chatterous is group chat combining the web, im, email and your phone.

Use your existing im, email and phone to chat

Once you create a group, you can chat with your friends through im, email or your phone. No need to use the website!

Your friends don’t need to sign up

Your friends don’t need to sign up to chat with you! They can reply right on their im, email or phone.

Help your friends reach each other

Once you’ve created a group for your friends, everyone in the group can reach each other whether they’re on im, email or out and about on their phone.

No installation needed

You don’t have to install any software! Just use your existing im client, email or phone!

So now I can be 300 miles away from a computer but still be active on my site in my chat room. And setup is a breeze. So come on in to my room say hello and see if this is something you might want to add as a service on your site or blog.

First Trailer for Star Wars Geek Drama ‘77′
May 27th, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

Movie has some potential and hey anything that has to do with geeks I am willing to give a try. :)

from firstshowing.net
I’m not sure why everyone is so fascinated with making movies about Star Wars recently, but I don’t mind, I’ll see every last one, I’m a big Star Wars geek. I’ve actually heard of the movie 77 before, back when it was previously known as 5-25-77 – which, for those who don’t know, is the exact day that A New Hope first came out. Unlike the movie Fanboys, this is more of a coming-of-age drama than a road trip comedy. There’s also a lot of great movie references, as the story is about a wannabe filmmaker whose life changes the moment he sees Star Wars. Every true self-proclaimed geek should be watching this trailer right now.

FeedStats – Bringing You The Stats From FriendFeed
May 26th, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

I recently wrote a blog post about a kool new service called What The Hashtag?!? by the gang at Microblink well they are at it again releasing the service call FeedStats which bring you all those stats that us geeks just love to get about the services we use.

Today we’d like to announce our second public project, FeedStats. FeedStats exists for the purpose of visualizing FriendFeed users’ data to see how they interact not only with the service, but with other users. It’s a quick way to find what services they’re using, when they post, and who interacts with their content the most.

With FeedStats you can get info like how much you or someone else is posting daily, what services you are using the most to post content, which day do you post the most, who are you most compatible with on FriendFeed, ect ect.

According to FeedStats I post an average of almost 67 times a day, I like Monday’s to post and I use FriendFeed the most when it comes to services with Twitter not far behind.

This kind of service is not only a great way to see how you and others are using the service it also allows you to find others on FriendFeed that might have the same interests as you and worth a follow.

Using FriendFeed As My Twitter Client
May 26th, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

FriendFeed

This past weekend I decided to make a change with how I interact with Twitter by setting up FriendFeed to be my client of choice to monitor, post, and reply on Twitter.

So far it has been pretty effective but there are a few holes at the moment like if someone is not a friend or imaginary friend of mine of Facebook I will not get their @ replies (using tweetbeep to catch any that fall in the cracks at this time) as well as the ability to have mobile posts automatically post to twitter (it can be done in settings but I dont want every message to go to twitter).

My main goal with going this route is to get as much of my online activity onto FriendFeed…I really enjoy the service and how it allows me to find out what is hot out there on the web, allows me to interact with a great community, and share all kinds of great content and such with my followers.

How is this done you ask? It is pretty easy really just create groups of your FriendFeed friends like for mine I have one for the guys of my favorite podcast the ffundercats, local twitter users, and one for the gang on the social geeks podcast. Once I have them in a group I create a saved search pulling only their twitter posts and getting rid of the rest. With that you now have a twitter stream to your liking! If you are interested in trying something like this out let me know and I can help you set it up.

I now have FriendFeed as my news stream, my podcast stream, my twitter stream, and pretty much my finger on the pulse of the web and even the world. Pretty kool huh?

Monday I posted to FriendFeed that I was making the switch to FriendFeed as my Twitter client and a pretty good discussion opened up so I wanted to share it with you to check out and even get your thoughts and input….so if you are on FriendFeed give us your 2 cents on the subject.

Trailer For The 2009 Reboot of “V”
May 21st, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

So growing up in the 80’s one of my favorite mini series was “V” and “V: The Final Battle“.  Now fast forward to 2009 and ABC is bringing back the story with a reboot that from the trailer looks like it is gonna be pretty sweet.

You might recognize Morena Baccarin from Firefly who plays the leader of the Visitors (not sure if her name is Diana like in the original series)

geek blog Once Upon A Geek had some extra footage from the new series as well that you can check out below.

At The Movies With The Geek : Terminator Salvation
May 21st, 2009 by (jeff)isageek

terminator

So Allison and I checked out the most recent Terminator movie and both of us came away enjoying the film but myself I feel when it comes to the summer flicks so far Star Trek is still king….Allison on the other hand has a stance of “apples to oranges” when it comes to comparing.

We felt there were a lot of the parts in the movie that had a feel of other films like the machines that go around capturing humans felt and even almost sounded like the ones from War of the Worlds as well as how the humans would stop the terminator machines was very matrix like.

A few thoughts

  • I liked Christian Bale as John Conner
  • Some great action and explosions
  • Common is the man! He wears sunglasses in a battle at night!
  • Glad they did a future story instead of a terminator comes back to the present
  • A familiar face shows up (got a good cheer from the audience)

Anyways over all I would say it was an enjoyable film but as stated earlier Star Trek is still king of the summer movie season (at least for now).
