What SUP FriendFeed?
December 21st, 2008 by (jeff)isageek

friendfeed

Found a great way to get your blog posts hitting the FriendFeed service in record time using the services Simple Update Protocol or SUP!

SUP (Simple Update Protocol) is a simple and compact “ping feed” that web services can produce in order to alert the consumers of their feeds when a feed has been updated. This reduces update latency and improves efficiency by eliminating the need for frequent polling.

FriendFeed blog post on SUP

I initially found out about this from Josh Haley, a Wordpress plugin (WP-SUP), as well as a little video put together by Benjamin Golub.

known issue : apparently there is an issue if you use Feedburner where it is stripping the tags that are added by the plugin..so just so you know that.

Ok with that said I am gonna give the SUP a try with this post. If all works right it should post right away to FriendFeed. 3, 2, 1…..

  • wow posted i like .00045 seconds :)
  • the comment seemed to post faster then usual as well.
  • impressive.
  • I must say it is always an honor to have Robert Scoble like one of your blog posts. :)
  • anyone else using the plugin? any issues? minus the feedburner one that is already known.
  • Jeff - no other issues, but the feedburner one is a showstopper, so to speak. Still leaving it installed.. who knows, things might change down the road ;)
  • Not using it yet but push vs poll architecture is so much better. As someone who's written tons of content crawling / parsing code, it's definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, like most of these systems, once people start to game the system, it becomes nothing but noise as spammers and unscrupulous $!@#ers flood the notification system with viagra ads. I'm interested to read up on SUP and see what protections they've built in. Someone is going to solve this problem eventually.
  • well the test worked and it posted in record time...pretty much I hit the post button in wordpress and then when to friendfeed and hit refresh and it was there. very nice!
  • Hey Jeff, glad to hear it worked for you. The feedburner issue is a real bummer. Let me know if you have any problems or questions about the plugin.
