12seconds.tv : Get Your Friends Updates Via RSS

Over the last few weeks I have been playing around with 12seconds.tv a lot and have to say its a fun little service. Not gonna change the world or find a cure for cancer but a kool little service.
Once thing I didnt like was not having an rss feed to throw into google reader or on my friendfeed to know when a contact had updated.
So for that I went to Yahoo Pipes and the 12seconds API. Armed with that and help from my buddy Olivier you now can get that information. Its a simple feed with not a lot of information but it does what I need and that is updating me via rss.
note : all you need to do is go into the source code and take my username out unless you want my friends updates hehe.
enjoy and if you come up with or find something better please do let me know!
Hot Streaming 8-bit Goodness

I recently discovered kohina which streams 8/16 bit music straight from consoles like the commodore 64 and atari 2600. Now if you are a geek like me this is some awesome news as this has become my background music when I am at work and I am gonna get my fm transmitter out and see if I can stream from my phone to my car stereo which would be hellakool!
Kohina is a free "just for fun" web stream, streaming the classic 8/16 bit computer, arcade, and console music of our misspent youth, as well as the latest scene music from the platforms that remain active.
Check it out and let me know what you think.
Ubiquity For Firefox = Hellakool!!

Just found out about this sweet project over at mozilla labs called Ubiquity. What is Ubiquity you ask?
An experiment into connecting the Web with language.
Ubiquity's goals are to:
Empower users to control the web browser with language-based instructions. (With search, users type what they want to find. With Ubiquity, they type what they want to do.)
Enable on-demand, user-generated mashups with existing open Web APIs. (In other words, allowing everyone (not just Web developers) to remix the Web so it fits their needs, no matter what page they are on, or what they are doing.)
Use Trust networks and social constructs to balance security with ease of extensibility.
Extend the browser functionality easily.
I dont know about you but this seems like a pretty kool app that takes firefox functionality to the next level. Check out this video demonstrating Ubiquity

Filtering Your Friends with FriendFeed

So FriendFeed has the new look over at beta.friendfeed.com and one of the kool new features is the ability to put your friends or people you subscribe to in groups to lower the noise or just allow you to get what noise you want based on what you are looking for in that group. So how do you have your groups so far? I would love to know as I am working on getting that all ironed out for myself
Right now I have 2 groups I have created in offline friends which would be coworkers, family, misc friends i know personally who might just have a flickr feed, maybe a blog, ect - I like to call these my none geek friends. Then for my second so far is kc friends where I have local podcasters, social media geeks, and bloggers.
For now that is it....now I have to decide how am i gonna group others like Corvida, idonotes, wayne sutton, j.phil, ect.
So how are you using the new FriendFeed Filter? Would love to hear any thoughts on the matter. Basically I am just looking for ideas....hehe
Social Media + Fantasy Football = Charity League
Adam Ostrow of Mashable and Readburner recently put the call out on his blog for bloggers and social media types to join in a fantasy football league with the winner of the league getting to donate their winnings in their name to the charity of their choice.
I thought this was an awesome idea to take something I always enjoy doing each year which is fantasy football and give back to a an organization that gave so much to me growing up - The Boy Scouts of America (of which I am an Eagle Scout).
So with that said here is the team i drafted:
| The Geek Squad | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1. | (9) | Terrell Owens |
| 2. | (12) | Clinton Portis |
| 3. | (29) | Larry Fitzgerald |
| 4. | (32) | Marques Colston |
| 5. | (49) | David Garrard |
| 6. | (52) | Brandon Jacobs |

| 11. | (109) | Matt Forte |
| 12. | (112) | Jon Kitna |
| 13. | (129) | Jake Delhomme |
| 14. | (132) | Bobby Engram |

My Hall Of Fame Tweet! The Chinese Restaurant
First I wanted to thank Mona for putting my tweet that of course was cross posted to FriendFeed in the FriendFeed Hall Of Fame (lol) and second I thought I would share it with those maybe who follow the blog but not my other stuff like FriendFeed or Twitter.

Basically the story behind this was I use BrightKite to check in places I go and sometimes you have to do a search to find the location you are looking for. So I put in the Restaurant's name hit search and wouldnt you know as one of the options to choose from the search was the Grandview Animal Hospital!!!!! Allison and I got a huge laugh out of that and from the responses I got so did everyone else.
good stuff and another example of technology adding a little humor to our lives.

Uniting FriendFeeder’s Around The Interweb

One of my fellow FriendFeeders Hao Chen has created a really kool little web app that lets you put in your FriendFeed username, select the service you want to check out....whamo! you got your list of links to your FriendFeed friends with accounts on that service.
Great way to find everyone you follow on the interweb. It is in the early stages so you might find some issues but its a great start to what I think is a great little service.
[note : I already have found some people I follow on other services on other services like brightkite and del.icio.us pretty sweet!]
Great Job Hao!
The Vader Project – Vader Meets Art

The Vader Project brings Star Wars and art together by taking artists thoughts and ideas and putting them on the helmet of the dark lord of the sith Darth Vader.
From the images and tv spots I have seen it looks like an awesome exhibit. Hopefully some day I will get to catch it live.
If you have had a chance to check it out let us know what you think? have pics on flickr or somewhere? share the link. Below is a segment that was done on G4 showing the project it Japan.

My 5000th Tweet!!!

Tonight I hit a milestone on Twitter with my 5000th update to the service. I have had a great time sending out updates, links, and whatever else via the service and have met a lot of kool people in the process.
I just wanna thank everyone who follows me and those who have responded back to my many many posts. Looking forward to the next 5000!
Here is a little video I did for my 5000th tweet.
The Galactic Empire Invades San Francisco
This is a pretty kool little video of the invasion of San Francisco by the Empire. Why did I not see this on CNN or MSNBC?
Plugin FriendFeed Comments Into Your Blog

I am not really sure why I had not blogged about this earlier as I have had the plugin installed for awhile now but like they say better late then never....what am I talking about? Are you a FriendFeed user? Would you love to have a record on your own blog of people who commented or liked your post on FriendFeed? Well you can!
The WordPress plugin FriendFeed Comments by Glenn Slaven allows you to display on your individual blog posts (I have mine right above my disqus comments) everyone from FriendFeed who either comments or likes your post.
I think this is a pretty kool little plugin as it sorta molds both worlds together. Installation is a snap and you just have a line of code you insert where ever in you post...could be easier....I will say I am not sure why but my post from FriendFeed all come up with a post date of like December 30th, 1969. I can live with that though hehe.
Atari 2600 welcome to the 21st Century!
I have always been a big fan of the Atari 2600 and had planned on setting it up in our newly finished basement for people to play around with when they came over while watching tv or whatever.
Today though I thought I wonder what it would be like on my 42 inch plasma with surround sound....well the answer is pretty sweet!!!
I got it hooked up and in no time I was playing pac-man, galaga, space invaders on the plasma with full surround sound which was giving me an audio orgasm...hehe
Here is a little video I took and threw up on 12seconds

Making My Site More Friend(Feed)ly

These days I find myself spending more and more time on FriendFeed as it has pretty much become my place for following friends, following podcasts, following blog updates, and just finding kool new content in general...but for more on those thoughts make sure to check out my past posts on FriendFeed.
Today I want to talk about deciding to integrate FriendFeed with my site and really when it comes down to it there really is not much to it....a little designing, a little css, and a little embedding.
Designing The Page
First I setup my website with 2 <div>'s with one being for my menu on the left side and then the other being where my friendfeed content will be located. This of course would just be what you are looking for look wise or what you find catches your eye.
Embedded FriendFeed
In order to get all your content from the site you have to use the following script from FriendFeed :
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://friendfeed.com/embed/widget/<USERNAME>"></script>
Obviously you will replace <USERNAME> with your username to grab your content and you can also add "?num=VALUE" to set how many entries you would like to be displayed at one time and then you can add "?source=VALUE" which would allow you to just get a service by itself (twitter, friendfeed, disqus, youtube, ect).
CSS
Once you add the script to your site and take a look at the content you are probably gonna find you wanna get rid of some of the default formatting that comes with the FriendFeed widget. This of course would be based on taste and integration with the current look you are going with but here is my css to just get you started.
div.friendfeed {
margin-top: -5px;
}
.friendfeed .header {
display:none;
}
.friendfeed div.feed {
border:0px;
}
.friendfeed .feed .entry {
border-top: 2px dotted #cccccc;
}
I would like to give credit to Jason Griffey and his site for giving me the inspiration to do this.
So why did I do this? Is this the end of my blog? First let me say no its not the end of my blog....I find FriendFeed to be a great resource to help bring all the service you use togather and follow your friends in one place...so you will see my blog posts from jeffisageek.net/blog right there at the new jeffisageek.net.
As to why I did it well for me I am always looking for a new way to share my content (FriendFeed makes that pretty easy) and also I always enjoy just tinkering with a little code here a little css tweak there so in some ways it was just a little experiment to see what I could do and I must say I like what I have and think it is here to stay for awhile (or till I decide to mess around with something else...hehe).
Is this something you are interested in? Have some questions? Feel free to drop me an email or IM and I would be more then happy to help you out the best I can.
“The Shave” – Making A Change
I decided to shave my beard tonight and go for a different look. recorded a before and after and loaded it on 12seconds. Here are the videos below:

So what do you think? Let me know.
I Only Have 12 Seconds To Save The World!
......or to at least create a video with the new micro-videocasting service 12seconds.

The concept of 12seconds is pretty easy to grasp . You shoot a video that is 12 seconds in legth on your phone or webcam and then share it with the world...that easy. Pretty simple concept and execution but can be loads of fun just throwing little videos up on the site.
just saying hello on 12seconds.tv
I kind of think of it as the twitter of video where you have a limited about of time instead of characters minus all the downtime us tweeters are use to these days. Oh and speaking of twitter you can setup to alert all your followers on twitter when you have a new video to share with the interweb.
12seconds is currently in alpha so you have to have an invite to get in on the action. Need one? Just leave a comment with your email addy and I will get one out to ya.
Sharing is Caring : My Guest Post On ReadBurner

A day after I got the awesome chance to be a guest on readerburner weekly live! I was also given the honor of throwing a guest post together for the readburner blog.
The post was created out of a discussion we had on the show about using google shared items to get your stories from the blogosphere and I shared with the others how I had taken and unsubscribed from all my feeds then turned around used google shared items, readburner feeds, twitter, and friendfeed to get my stream under control.
So with that said jump over to the blog post titled "How I Unsubscribed From Every Blog" and leave a comment.
Thanks to everyone who reads the post, comments, listened to the show, or just subscribes to my feed...you guys rock!
Oh and thanks to Phil from Skribin for validating that "I love the stream"

Comments Are Blog Posts To Billy!
Testing out the new reblogging feature in Disqus. thats right now you can take any comment that is using disqus and turn it into your very own blog post or part of a blog post. Will be interesting to play around with this feature. What do you think?
