Adocu – Because Microblogging is so 2007

First you had blogging but then recently people started going toward microblogging and using services like twitter and tumblr and today I am prowd to announce the arrival of nanoblogging!!!!
Does 140 characters seem like a novel sometime to write? Are you finding yourself getting aches in your fingers? Well Adocu and nanoblogging is for you....its one word blogging. Thats right tell the world how you feel in one word. Of course that one word could be multiple words without spaces as well.

Now is this gonna take off? I doubt it....I think it is pretty much a way for us geeks to find something else to create out there that people may or may not ever use. The service has no API, no way to search for friends on the serivce, or a way to see a public timeline without logging in as I can see.
For the most part I just blogged this to let you know nanoblogging has arrived on the interweb. enjoy!
Our New Addition To The Family
Yesterday Allison and I welcomed our new redbud tree into the family and placed it in front of the house.
It was an adventure getting it home and in the ground but now it is here for all to see...and will soon have some friends joining it in our little flower bed type deal we have created. (pics to come of course)
Using Twitter To Help Keep Your Dates/Tasks Organized

Two services I use to keep my daily activities and tasks organized are google calendar and remember the milk which I integrate with gmail and my mobile device to have it on the go as well.
Now of course anyone who reads this blog knows I use twitter on a daily basis as well...heck these days who doesn't so I wanted to share with you two services that allow you to add dates/tasks and retrieve information from services like remember the milk and google calendar.
The first we are gonna look at is Twittercal which of course allows you to send a direct message via twitter to the services twitter bot which in turn posts your information to your calendar...easy as that. You of course have to be following them and likewise but it is a free service so that is always a plus. An example of a message you might send would be as follows : d gcal meeting with fred on monday, 25th of june at 9am
The second service we are gonna look at is the remember the milk one which actually comes straight from remember the milk and this one has a ton of features you can use to add, get info, or complete tasks.
First you will want to follow RTM on twitter. Then you can use commands from the following list to do what you need :
Command list
You can direct message the following commands to rtm. You may receive a confirmation or info back via a return direct message.
Adding tasks
pick up the milk adds a new task with the specified name to the Inbox
call jimmy at 5pm tomorrow adds a new task with the specified name and due date to the Inbox
return library books in 2 weeks adds a new task with the specified name and due date to the Inbox
Sending tasks
@username pick up the milk sends task to the specified Twitter username (this person must be set up with Remember The Milk too)
Updating tasks
!complete call jimmy completes the specified task (shortcut: !c)
!postpone call jimmy postpones the specified task (shortcut: !p)
Getting tasks
!today gets tasks due today (shortcut: !tod)
!tomorrow gets tasks due tomorrow (shortcut: !tom)
!getdue friday gets tasks due on the specified date (shortcut: !gd)
!getlist personal gets tasks from the specified list (shortcut: !gl)
!gettag call gets tasks with the specified tag (shortcut: !gt)
!getlocation office gets tasks at the specified location (shortcut: !go)
Setting up
!on enables task reminders
!off disables task reminders
!confirmon enables confirmations (task actions, such as adding tasks via Twitter, will be confirmed)
!confirmoff disables confirmations (task actions, such as adding tasks via Twitter, will be confirmed)
!help gets help info
!tips gets a list of commands
-----
One of the kool things about the remember the milk twitter service is you can also setup reminders to be sent to your twitter account so you dont forget that task that is maybe due in 30 min or so.
Overall these are two pretty simple ways to use twitter to help you stay organized and on top of all those meetings or tasks you have coming up in your near future. For me stuff like this is what makes having all these kool apps and services that integrate with each other awesome. It allows you to take the technologies and such you enjoy tinkering with and put them to use in real world scenario's.
Hope you discover something new you start using and as always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Happy Birthday WordPress!

Just wanted to wish my favorite blogging platform (which keeps me blog happy) WordPress a Happy 5th Birthday.
I have been using the server edition for a few years now and it has been great for helping me get my thoughts, funny videos, twitter thoughts out to the interweb.
If you are in the SF make sure you go to the WP Birthday Party and have some cake for me. Or take some pictures and let me know and Ill add them to this post.
As a final note if you are a blogger and not using WordPress I cannot praise it enough and would say it is well worth the upgrade to your blog. Very easy to setup, maintain, and of course very customizable.

Heart Walk – Help A Geek Raise Some Money For A Good Cause

Hey everyone this coming May 31st I will be walking with a team to help raise money for the American Heart Association and I need your help!!! If you have a few dollars to spare I would love to have your donation that will go toward helping fight the #1 and #3 killers of people yearly.
You're Making a Difference. Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.
Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you.
Anything you can give would be awesome!!! I plan to have some pics and video's and such up after the event so you can check them out. And if you have any question please feel free to email me, IM me, or shoot me a message on twitter. Also feel free to send the url out all over the net!!!!
Note : I just found out for online you have to pledge atleast $25.00 (which sucks). If you wanna pledge less you can write me a check and make it out to the "American Heart Association" or there is a form on my donation page that you can send directly to the American Heart Association in Kansas City if you are doing under $25]
Also if you feel comfortable you can just paypal me a donation to jeffisageek at gmail dot com. but i understand if you dont feel comfortable just sending me your money (especially in this day and age).
THANKS EVERYONE!!!!
Using Adobe Air?

I have found my self adding more and more Adobe Air applications as the days go by so with that I thought hey I should profile a few that I am using on a daily basis for those unfamiliar with what Adobe Air is or maybe just never seen a certain app.
Thwirl is the super popular twitter app that also lets you follow your friendfeed friends as well. It is super easy to use and allows you to send DM's, replies, and easily get alerts of new tweets. I highly recommend it if you us twitter/friendfeed a lot.
WebKut is an awesome little app that lets you grab images/screenshots from any website. an example would be all the logo's on this post that I grabbed using the application. you can either do the whole page or just a selection. it saves them for you and then you can throw them up on your blog post, website, or wherever you are gonna use them. very kool and for a blogger very useful!
Snackr is an rss ticker for your desktop that always you to put it on the top/bottom/sides and allows you to add rss feeds to scroll through. If you find a story you like click on it and it allows you to check out the original story. Now I dont see this taking over as my rss reader but I use it at work as kind of like a news ticker you would have on headline news just to see whats going on out there or something that catches the eye from time to time.
Just a nice little app that helps you keep your pulse on the interweb as you are doing something else.
A new one I am checking out
Just started messing around with this one but am slowly using it more and more...what it allows you to do is drag an image onto the application and based on the setting you have selected it will shrink your image for use with a presentation, blog post, or website. a nice little handy and super easy utility to use.
So are there any Adobe Air apps you use that you would like to share with me and the readers? which do you use daily? Would love to hear about them so lets get the comment string going.
TWITTER!

Techcrunch FTW! Greatest Post Ever! Sorry couldnt resist. Oh and while I am here with twitter on the mind check out this video labelled Twitter Fail created by Duncan Riley - Good Stuff.
Happy Towel Day

I know the day is almost over but I would not feel right if I did not mention today is the annual Towel Day which is celebrated every May 25th in honor of Douglas Adams writer of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
To celebrate the day I am actually listening to the audiobook while doing a little blogging and relaxing.
Thanks Douglas for the great ride!

I am just starting to play around with it and will work on a more detailed post after a few hours of checking it out but just wanted to spread the news to the geeks. thanks to Benjamin Golub for the development of the mobile edition.

Gmail is a tool I use everyday and I have found myself integrating it more with greasemonkey scripts and plugins to incorporate my calendar, remember the milk, and google reader.

Toluu Adds Twitter And Strengthens Its Streams

My favorite RSS discovery service Toluu announced via their blog today they have made a few additions to the service including integration with twitter (and the ability to change the twitter message to your choice) and modifications to the activity stream including the ability to see activity from the whole Toluu service just not you and your friends.

[above: twitter post in action]
I have talked to Caleb who runs Toluu and you can expect more features like this in the new future. If you are not familiar with Toluu it is a service that allows you to import your rss feeds to share as well as to discover new feeds you may have never known about. It really creates a great community and resource for finding new feeds.
other coverage of the Toluu additions :
shegeeks : Toluu Activities Includes Twitter Integration
louis gray : Toluu Embraces Twitter With New Integration Option
tw3nty3ight : Toluu Adds Twitter Support And Redesigns Activity Stream
Need an invite to Toluu? If so just let me know as I have some to give out.

One of the cons I really enjoyed following online (even though I would have loved to be there in person) was ROFLCon which celebrates internet memes and such like icanhascheezburger, tron guy, and homestar runner to name a few.

Guest Post Over At SheGeeks
Today Corvida from SheGeeks gave me the opportunity to do a guest post on her awesome (or awesomesauce) blog.
I was thankful for the chance and went ahead and wrote about the new integration of seesmic video comments within your disqus comments. For the title I went with a play on words - "Visually Disqus'n - Disqus Integrates Seesmic" - thought that was good.
So with that said head over to SheGeeks - check out my post and subscribe to the rss feed as well.
Thanks Corvida!
Tron Guy – Idol Of The Geeks!
