Help me keep the shell people alive.

I like this guys thoughts. ladies lets get to it!

There is a sad truth to the world today. I am part of a dying breed of people known as "shell users." We are an old-fashioned bunch, preferring the warm glow of a green screen full of text over the cold blockiness of a graphical interface. We use ssh, scp, and even occassionally ftp. Back in the days before high-speed connections ("broadband"), we would dial up during off-hours to avoid being slammed with huge phone bills. The whole "Microsoft Windows" fad will fade away sooner or later, but in the interim, our kind is facing extinction.

Because there are fewer and fewer of us, I must help keep our lineage alive. I am looking for someone to help me do this. I need a woman (obviously) who is willing to raise a child with me in the method of Unix. Our child will be introduced to computers at a young age, and will be setting emacs mode before any other child can even read. I earn a sufficient income to support a family in modest comfort. Other than the fact our child will be bright, text-based and sarcastic, we will otherwise be a normal family. We will even go to Disney World and see Mickey Mouse.

So, if you are a woman between the ages of 23 and 43 who is ready to raise a child in the way of the shell, let me know so we can begin the process.

and an FYI he says he is serious.

Open Source is a lot like sex….

Over at The Great Geek Manual they had a pretty funny post giving some examples of how open source is alot like sex. Here were a few of my favorites:

Most young users have to turn to the Internet for information about open source, because the topic gets skirted in most schools.

While there are a few freaks parading around for the media, most people using software without a commercial licensing agreement still keep their practices behind closed doors.

The biggest problem with programming in America today is that all the glossy commercial photos in the media have created unreasonable expectations. I mean, seriously. Do you know how long it takes them to position the software for one of those video demos?

be sure to head over and check out the whole list when you get a chance.

YouTube RSS feeds

youtube

One thing about YouTube in the past was they really didn't have to many rss feeds you could grab except for like someone's videos they published (or they didnt make it easy to find others). With YouTube's new API the blog Google Operating System recently revealed some new feeds you can go out there and grab and for an rss/youtube geek like me that is fantastic news! Now you can grab feeds like:

Search Feeds
Your Subscriptions
Playlists

Those are just a few...so jump on over and check the post out and add some new youtube feeds to your aggregator.

ReadBurner : aggregating google shared items

readburner

I am a HUGE google reader fan and use it daily and hourly on top of that. I recently started sharing items that I found going through my hundreds of feeds and creating a linkblog that could be shared to all my readers.

Google reader helps me fuel my rss and information addictions but of course I am always on the search for more! That is where the new site ReadBurner comes in...basically aggregating google shared items from all over the net...showing what stories are currently the most popular now, this week, and all time.

readburner

The funny thing about the service is it is in the very very very early alpha stages but was discovered and outed :) of course a big plus for us! On a side note with it being in alpha it already seems like a very good web app that will only get better.

Here is a note from the developer Alexander Marktl

Hi folks!
Due to a mistake my hobby project Readburner got leaked today. Louis Gray somehow found my site, which is hosted on an Amazon EC2 server (heck I didn't even had registered a domain name and don't know if I'm happy with my codename). This site is obviously still in very early development. If traffic comes it will clearly go down. Moreover my parsing technolgy is still not tested, so don't wonder if strange things happens.

I'm not gonna close the site anyway. In the Internet you cannot hide anything that's leaked, so be it. Let's see is as an experiment how fast a site can spread through the Google Reader shared items, which is what ReadBurner aims to aggregate.

If you are into checking out linkblogs, sharing items in google, or just finding those new tech stories make sure you check out ReadBurner.

hashtags : tagging in twitter

hashtags

what are #hashtags? [from the site]

#hashtags are an easy way to track a specific topic or event using the Twitter network for hyper-instant communication, coordination and reporting.

Two of my favorite things these days is twitter and tagging. I have always thought it would be great to be able to tag twitter posts to get tweets on a certain subject and track that information.

with hashtags that is possible and it is pretty simple to do. All you have to do is subscribe to the hashtags bot within twitter (and have a twitter account of course) then put a '#' in front of a word and you are a hashtag pro! an example would be something like this:

going to the #apple store to get a new #macbookpro.

so with that anyone looking for posts with hashtags of #apple and #macbookpro would get your post.

The tagging of twitter posts is pretty new but seems to be picking up some steam and I think one kool thing would be twitter itself adding tagging and allowing it to not count toward the 140 character count. what do you think?

hashtag blog

another point i just thought I would throw out there you can also subscribe to an rss feed of your hashtags you want to follow - which for me is a HUGE plus.

GTD with twitter

Two services I use to help with GTD (Getting Things Done) are Google Calendar to keep me up on what events, meetings, gatherings, ect. and Remember the Milk to keep track of work and personal tasks to be completed.

Another service I use as you may know on a daily and sometimes hourly basis is twitter which I think pretty much any geek knows what that is by now :)

What is kool now is you have the ability to send direct commands to both services via your twitter account. First all you have to do is of course have a google calendar or rtm account...subscribe to them on twitter which for remember the milk is rtm and for google calendar is twittercal or gcal on the twitter service.

After you have that all setup it is pretty simple in that you just have to send direct messages to those twitter accounts which in turn will add the information to the respective account.

ie for twittercal - d gcal meeting tomorrow at 2 PM.

good sources of info:
twittercal page
remember the milk on twitter info

Also feel free to shoot me an email or twitter message if you have any questions.
